THE MAN WHO SWIMS TOWARDS SHARKS
Is it possible to change people’s perceptions of sharks? Marine biologist Dr. Yannis Papastamatiou utilizes new technology to inspire a different view on these remarkable creatures and their role in our blue planet.
Alucia Productions traveled with Yannis to the Bahamas to document him at work. Over the course of two weeks, cinematographer Owen Donavan and Field Associate Producer Marjorie Crowley filmed Yannis diving to extreme depths to conduct reef surveys. During this expedition, we learned about who Yannis is, the work he does, and how he utilizes tags and cameras to understand shark behavior. This film showcases the innate passion Yannis has for sharks, and the groundbreaking approach he takes to understand why they do what they do.
Throughout his career, Yannis has tagged over 1,000 sharks and published close to 60 scientific papers. The data he has collected has contributed to the expansion of Marine Protected Areas and wildlife migration corridors. Yannis is an assistant professor of Marine Biology at Florida International University. Yannis continues to create a more comprehensive understanding of the ocean’s most notorious creature.
